Reynolds "Ren" Shultz, 78, Lawrence, KS

Memorial services for Reynolds (Ren) Shultz, 78, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with military honors by the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14.

Cremation has taken place. Mr. Shultz died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Hickory Pointe Rehabilitation Center, Oskaloosa.

He was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Jefferson County, the son of Guy Edward and Darlene (Woolsey) Shultz. Mr. Shultz served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He received the Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation. He was elected to the state senate in 1964 and re-elected in 1968, and was chairman and member of various committees. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1967. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kansas in 1970, where he also served on many boards, committees and commissions. He was appointed as a consultant to the Farmers Home Administration in March 1973 and became the director-at-large for FHA in the Kansas City, Mo., office in January 1974. He was appointed as an assistant to the administrator of ASCS in April 1975 and in August 1976 began working in the Kansas City area until resigning in March 1977. Mr. Shultz had worked on the campaigns to elect Jim Jeffries in 1978 and Bob Dole in 1974. He also was an agriculture and veterans affair adviser before being appointed the state director-at-large for the FHA, retiring in 1991. He was a past member of the Agricultural Hall of Fame's board of governors; past director of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce; Jefferson County board of education clerk; Jefferson County Historical Society board member; Jefferson County Extension board president for several terms; past member of Farmland Industries board of directors; assistant sponsor of the Douglas County Teenage Republicans for six years; 4-H Club Community Leader for 10 years; member of the National American Legion Americanism Committee; legislative adviser for American Legion Boy's State for seven years; and legislative adviser for State American Legion. Mr. Shultz was a member of the following organizations: American Legion, 40 & 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Native Sons and Daughters, Elks, Kiwanis, Eagles, Farm Bureau, and National Grange. He had been the district chairman of the Kansas Republican Veterans Club and the Kansas Day Club. He also was elected an honorary member-at-large at the 1968 Teenage Republican State Convention and received Kansas Balanced Farming and Family Living Award from the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce.

He married Donna L. Thompson on Aug. 10, 1941, in Topeka. She died March 5, 1985. He married Judy Nelson Mansfield June 7, 1986, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Guy, Escondido, Calif.; two daughters, Michele Ann Fate, Overland Park, and Jennie Washburn, Baldwin; two stepsons, Curt Mansfield, Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Brian Mansfield, Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Betty Mae Zpperer, Valdosta, Ga., and Virginia Anderson, Redmond, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to the Capper Foundation or Hospice of Jefferson County. They may be sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
