Post Howard S. Reid, 81, Carrollton, MO

Howard S. Reid passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2008. He was born on September 24, 1927 to Wilda Ann Reid (Martin) and Charles Samuel (Pete) Reid and except for college and service in the Marine Corps was a lifelong resident of Carrollton, MO. Howard was a graduate of Carrollton High School and Westminster College in Fulton, MO.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and later in the Korean Conflict.

He was married on August 20, 1950, to Eva Gene Goodson and returned to Carrollton to work with his father at the Reid Livestock Pavilion and on the family farm. Howard helped with an auction at the early age of 12 and became known as the world's youngest auctioneer. He went on to conduct hundreds of household, farm, estate and benefit auctions throughout Carroll, Lafayette, and Ray counties. He worked the family farm and managed the auction business by himself for several years and was later joined by his son, Charles, in the farming operation. Howard was active in various professional, recreational and civic organizations. He enjoyed playing several sports including fast pitch softball and tennis upon returning to Carrollton after his Marine Corps service. He was part of the original group that formed Little League baseball in Carrollton, coaching and umpiring for many years and was selected to work the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. He refereed high school football and basketball and college football during these years ascending to work in the Big 8 (now the Big 12) Conference. He was an Eagle Scout and remained actively involved with Troop 414 for many years. Howard contributed to the Carrollton education system by serving on the school board for 12 years, 6 as president. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church and served in many capacities as a Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Board, and Trustee. He was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather, affectionately known as "Pa-Pa" to Dr. Timothy Reid and his wife Gina; Kristen Horine and her husband Wyatt; Katie Potter, her husband Brice, and son Landen; Adam, Kyle, and Caitlin Crowley; and Samuel Reid. He was beloved and will be missed by his wife of 58 years, Eva Gene, and children Janet Crowley and her husband, Gary; Charles Reid; and Steve Reid and his wife, Carmen. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Martha and Dr. Donald Kuenzi; his brother Dr. William (Bill) Reid and his wife Betty; and his sister-in-law Colleen (Goodson) Hancock and her husband Marion. As well as, numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the First Christian Church, Carrollton, Missouri, with Reverend Larry Gray officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton, Missouri. Visitation will be from 12:30-1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. The family suggests contributions be made to the First Christian Church of Carrollton in memory of Howard. They may be left at or mailed to Gibson Funeral Home, 201 S. Main, Carrollton MO 64633.
