Okinawa 1959-60

Interested if anyone out there was stationed on Okinawa during 1959-60. I was stationed at Camp Butler (the old one that shared the compound with Camp McTureous) with the Public Works section. Usually pulled liberty at Koza with my two buddies.

Futema, 1960-61

I showed up Okinawa on April 1, 1960. Not only was it April Fool's Day but it was also Easter Sunday - coincidently the combination of calendar events in 1945 when the Marines landed in WWII.

I was stationed first at Camp Mercy, an old (condemed) Army Hospital from the Korean War on Highway 1. We were assigned to MAG-16 a Marine Air Group stationed at the MCAF, Futema. However, the Futema air Facility was still be constructed by the SeaBees; the barracks weren't ready yet. Moved to Futema after a couple of weeks at Camp Mercy.

I remember Koza as an excellent liberty town and was something like a $0.15 Okinawa bus ride away - it took several months before the locals established the town of Futema as a decent liberty 'port.'

Naha, in my opinion, was the class of liberty excursions however.

Deployed to Southeast Asia (Thailand) after about 10 months on "The Rock." I had one of the last 15 month overseas tours for Marines. The Thailand deployment was pretty cool.
