Harvey Herman Borgwardt, 84, Madison, WI

Harvey Herman Borgwardt, age 84, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in his home.

He was born on Aug. 14, 1925, in Greenfield, the son of Ruth (Radmer) and Harold Borgwardt. Harvey grew up in Greenfield and joined the U.S. Marines on Dec. 9, 1942. He proudly served as one of the Fighting Fourth Division in the Pacific, as a corporal. Harold saw action on Iwo Jima, Truk, Tinian, Saipan and Eniwetok, and served in Okinawa. His unit received several Presidential citations. When Harvey came home, he married Lorna D. Jackson on June 29, 1947, and had a family. He began apprenticeship as an orthotist at the University of Wisconsin Hospital. Harvey later owned his own company, Alijan Company, which served many people over the years supplying orthotics and prosthetics. He invented many applications, one of the most interesting ones was a prosthetic leg fabricated for the University of Wisconsin for a cow that was carrying a special embryo. Harvey fabricated the prosthesis from a truck exhaust pipe and a hockey puck. He helped thousands of people, but the cow gained worldwide recognition. Harvey also invented a bone stapling device for an orthopedic surgeon. Harvey had many happy years camping at Willow Mill Campsite in Rio, he enjoyed motorcycling, snowmobiling, handcrafting furniture, and piloting small aircraft. Harvey was a former member of the Elks and E.A.A. He has many friends and family members that will miss his smile, his harmonica playing, and his many stories. At the end of his life, Harvey had his daughter and many friends and family at his side, singing him songs and praying him to the heavenly realms.

Harvey is survived by his son, Heath Borgwardt; his daughter, Ronna Trapanese; his grandsons, Dominic and Anthony Trapanese; his sisters, Shirley Mueller and Joyce Luther; his brother, Norbert (Darlene); and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna (Jackson); mother, Ruth (Radner); father, Harold; his sister, Gayle Arrowood; his brother, Lester; and his brother-in-law, Ronald Mueller.

A memorial is going to be held in the summer of 2010 at Willow Mill Campsite with Marine honors and friends all around. Date and time are pending.

We want to thank Hospice for being the angels that walked the earth to help assist Harvey at his time of transition. Semper Fi. Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Centers, 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420
