121st N.C.B. - With a force of Marine officers from the Fleet Marine Force, the 121st moved from New River, N.C., Aug. 17, 1943 to Camp Pendleton Calif. where they were redesignated 3rd Battalion 20th Marine Engineers, 4th Marine Division. The 121st embarked from San Diego Jan. 8, 1944 joining the assault operations on Roi-Namur Marshall Islands, then returned to Maui, Hawaiian islands, the last of the outfit landed there Feb. 25, 1944. The next operation for the 121st was the assault on Saipan on June 15, 1944, followed almost immediately by the invasion of Tinian on July 24. The outfit was stationed on Tinian until June 1945, where it moved back to Saipan and was still there at war's end. This Battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for it's combat operations while attached to the Fourth Marine Division.
