Arlington National Cemetery

Christian Wimsatt Myler
Sergeant, United States Marine Corps

Christian Wimsatt Myler, 26, a Washington resident and Sergeant in the Marine Corps who served in the war in Iraq, died in a motorcycle accident September 6, 2003, in National City, California.

A spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said Sergeant Myler was alone on his motorcycle when he lost control on a curve as he tried to enter Interstate 5. He crashed into a guardrail support post.

Sergeant Myler was assigned to the elite Special Operations Group at Camp Pendleton, California. He served in Iraq with a reconnaissance unit of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and saw action in several incidents before returning to Camp Lejeune on Memorial Day.

He was born in Washington and lived in the Chevy Chase neighborhood. He was a 1995 graduate of Gonzaga College High School, which members of his family had attended as far back as 1826. At Gonzaga, he played on the football, soccer and wrestling teams. He also was active in the Support Builds Strength group.

He was an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 52, and while in high school, he worked on the Spirit of Washington cruise line, earning his captain's license in 1996. He attended the College of Charleston and joined the Marines in 1997.

Survivors include his parents, Patricia W. and John A. Myler, and sisters Caitlin and Brigid Myler, all of Washington; a brother, Marine Lieutenant Devin Myler of Pensacola, Florida; and his grandmother, Evelyn Rose Myler of West St. Paul, Minnesota.
