William Herbert Good, 78, of Panama City, FL

William Herbert Good, 78, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, at GlenCove Nursing Pavilion.
Herb was born May 23, 1930, in Sevier, N.C. A native of the North Carolina mountains, Herb was reared in an orphanage. After graduating as valedictorian of his high school class in Barium Springs, N.C., he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.

After his honorable service in the Marines, he enrolled at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees, with majors in biology and physical education. He played on the varsity golf and tennis teams. He was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.

In 1958, Herb and his wife, Jean, and their two children moved to Panama City, where he was to begin teaching at Gulf Coast Junior College as it was known then. Gulf Coast was only a year old and Herb wore a variety of hats,
teaching biology, physical science and physical education, as well as coaching the school's first golf and tennis teams.
In 1961, he was named associate dean in continuing education, community services, college development and federal projects, and two years later he was named administrative assistant in charge of all four functions. He later was named dean of special services. In 1963, he was awarded the Florida Governor's Award as conservative educator of the year. The Panama City Jaycees named him "Outstanding Young Man" in 1965.

He played a leading role in the development of the Gulf Coast Graduate Center, securing federal funding for equipment and new buildings and programs. He was a major factor in developing many of the buildings, ball fields, the Commodore Shrine and 10-acre arboretum. He also helped organize the Gulf Coast Junior College Athletic Association, and supervised plans for the Nursing Technology Building and Learning Resource Center. He also designed the first master sprinkling plan used to beautify the GCJC campus.

Awarded a National Science Foundation Scholarship, he attended Florida State University three consecutive summer terms and in 1966 took a semester's leave of absence from Gulf Coast to work on his doctorate at FSU under a Kellogg Foundation Grant.

He was a past president of the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club, "Operation Cinderella" at the Bay County Junior Museum. He also was a licensed building contractor and designed and built many beautiful homes and commercial structures in Bay County.

Herb was preceded in death by his former wife and lifelong friend, Jean Edwards Good. Mr. Good is survived by a daughter, Sandra Good Allen and husband, Scott; and a son, Michael Good and wife, Bobbie.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank all of the caring staff at GlenCove Nursing Pavilion for their love and compassion shown to Mr. Good. Expressions of sympathy may be submitted and viewed at our Web site,
