Post Paul G. Smith, 85, Kansas City, MO

Paul G. Smith, USMC, 85, of Kansas City, MO, passed away on November 11, 2010, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 14, from 1:30- 4:30 p.m. at Redemptorist Catholic Church, 3333 Broadway KCMO, with Rosary beginning promptly at 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial on Monday at 12 p.m. with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Paul was born in KCMO on March 6, 1925, to Creston and Stella Moeller Smith. He attended Redemptorist Grade School and graduated from De La Salle High School in 1942 where he served on the Alumni Board in recent years.
He entered the Marine Corp in 1943 and served his country in WWII. Paul survived Iwo Jima and earned a Purple Heart for his service in Guam. He had been active in the Marine Corp League & we thank all his League buddies for their recent visits to the VA Med Center. In July of 1949 he married June Enna and together raised their 9 children in midtown Kansas City. He was very involved in all their activities at school and in sports. He continued that interest with the grandchildren & great- grandchildren. He loved family get- togethers and always bragged about how many family and friends came for the 'parties.' Paul was an 80+ year parishioner of Redemptorist Catholic Church where he served as usher and lector in years past. His service to Our Lord also included the Holy Name Society, Council of Catholic Men and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Paul is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Creston "DeeDee" Smith and a grandson, Kyle Smith. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June; their 9 children, Terry Carroll (Rich), Donna Adams-Crahan (Jim), Paul Smith (Mary Ann), Mary "Dece" Beery, David Smith, Mark Smith (Jean), June "Cis" Thum (John), Joannie Ackland (Richard) and Judy Larsen (Bruce); 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The family would like to send a special thank you to the entire staff at the VA Hospital in KCMO for the tremendous care they gave to Paul for the past 5 weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Redemptorist Catholic Church. Condolences can be left at McGilley & Sheil Funeral Home, 11924 E. 47th St, Kansas City, MO 64133, 816-353-6555
