Loyal J. Sargent, 89, Monona/Cottage Grove, WI

MONONA/ COTTAGE GROVE - Loyal J. Sargent, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at the HospiceCare Center, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Aug. 1, 1920, in Eau Pleine, the son of John and Laura (Stertz) Sargent. Loyal served in the Marine Corps during World War II, in the Pacific. He married Catherine Mancl and in more than 70 years together, they raised 11 children. Loyal's entire career focused on education. He was a teacher, principal and retired as superintendent of the Monona Grove School District. Loyal was a member of Children Service Society, Coalition of the Aging, Eastside Optimists, 4-H, YMCA, Monona Senior Citizens, American Legion Post No. 248, United Way, Boy Scouts of America (receiving the Silver Beaver award), many other professional educational organizations, involved with ecumenical housing and a founding member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; children, Beverly (Joel) Morrison, Gerald (Laurie) Sargent, Marilyn (Dennis) Fuller, Patricia (Steven) Olson, Sandra (Jack) Finkel, Mary (John) Harker, Sue (Donald) Guess, Shelley (Michael) Schwartz, Julie (Rick) Johnson and Deanne (Andrew) Casey; son-in-law, James Anderson; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, with three on the way; a sister, Eunice (Ernest) Giese; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. Loyal was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Anderson; two infant sons, Robert and Kenneth; and two brothers, James and Donald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at noon on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, with Father John Meinholz presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Entombment will be at Highland Memory Gardens, with military honors conducted. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HospiceCare Inc. or a charity of the donor's choice. Thank you to Dr. Musa, and the staff and volunteers at HospiceCare, who are true angels on earth, for all of their care and support. Dad always said, "Is there anything I can do for you?"
