LtCol Dwain L. Redalen, USMC, (Ret), 86, La Crescent, MN

LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Lt. Col. Dwain L. Redalen, USMC retired, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in La Crosse. He was born May 8, 1922, in rural Lanesboro, Minn., to Ingvald and Julia (Iverson) Redalen and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Naval Aviation cadet program in 1942, and in 1943, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and designated as a naval pilot.

Dwain served in the Pacific area during World War II. He was involved in considerable military action in the combat zones of Korea, and also served a war-time tour in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966. He was awarded the silver star medal for conspicuous gallantry in action. In addition, he was awarded six other personal decorations for his actions in the combat zones. Dwain held numerous military citations and campaign medals, was an overseas veteran of three wars (World War II, Korea and Vietnam) and served for approximately 27 years of continuous active service as a pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired in 1969.

In 1947, he married Jacqueline Burleigh, and she preceded him in death after 42 years of marriage on Nov. 4, 1989. Dwain received a B.S. degree in business administration and later earned an associate’s degree in marketing. After military retirement, he worked in the real estate business. He held a real estate broker’s license and was a state certified real estate instructor.

Dwain was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent, Gittens-Leidel American Legion Post 595 in La Crescent, Thomas Rooney VFW Post 1530 in La Crosse, Retired Officers Association and Marine Corps Association. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, conversation with friends and spending time with family.

Dwain is survived by his daughter, Chrisann Thavenot of Minneapolis; a son, James (Kathy) Redalen of Sun Prairie, Wis.; five grandchildren, Shawn (Stefanie) Rommes, Vanessa Hislop, and Amanda, Molly and Sarah Redalen; along with two great-grandchildren, Carter and Lily Hislop.

In addition to his wife, Jacqueline, he was preceded in death by three brothers, six sisters and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in La Crescent, with Pastor Michael Woods officiating. Burial will take place in Lanesboro Lutheran Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 412 S. Third St., La Crescent, and again from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center. We appreciate the love and care you provided for Dwain.
