Robert Leo Brunkhorst, 87, Fond du Lac, WI

Robert Leo Brunkhorst, 87, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the Hospice Home of Hope.

Robert was born in Fond du Lac on April 9, 1922, the youngest of 11 children born to Henry Gottlieb Brunkhorst and Allie Adelia Klein Brunkhorst. In 1923, the family relocated to the Unity, Wis., area and endeavored to run a farm and tavern throughout the Depression years. During his teenage years, Robert returned to Fond du Lac and subsequently graduated from Goodrich High School. After graduation he joined the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific as a lieutenant during World War II. Upon returning to Fond du Lac in 1946, Robert secured a clerking position with the county municipal courts system. During this time he met his future wife, Flora Rose Koenigs, and they were married on Oct. 21, 1950, at St. Matthew's Rectory in Campbellsport. Throughout their careers, both Robert and Flora continued to honorably serve the public with Robert culminating his career as the Clerk of Courts for Fond du Lac County. Robert was actively involved in the Elks Club of Fond du Lac.

Survivors include two sons, William John (Mary) of Sammamish, Wash., and Bruce Robert (Rhonda) of Hubertus; three grandchildren, Emily of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Andrew and Austin of Hubertus; and his brother, Kenneth of Los Angeles, Calif.; and other relatives and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife in 2004; an infant son, David Leo in 1960; and siblings, Arlyn, Henry, Marjorie, Helen, Doris, DeLorr, Audrey, James and Jack.

Visitation: The family will receive relatives and friends at the Zacherl Funeral Home, 875 E. Division St., Fond du Lac, on Friday, May 8, 2009, from 4 to 7 p.m., and also on Saturday morning, from 9 to 10 a.m. Services: A funeral service will be held at the Zacherl Funeral Home on Saturday, May 9, at 10 a.m. Deacon Larry Hughes will preside. Entombment will follow at Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery. Memorials in Robert's name can be directed to St. Agnes Hospital Foundation for Hospice Hope or designated for diabetes treatment. Zacherl Funeral Home of Fond du Lac has been entrusted with Robert's arrangements and is serving his family. Additional information can be viewed at
