LtCol Domenick Muffi USMC (ret), 80, Vista/Cathedral City, CA

LtCol. Domenick Muffi, 80 VISTA/ CATHEDRAL CITY -- LtCol. Domenick Muffi passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2009. He was born Sept. 29, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Lt. Col. Muffi graduated in 1963 with honors, with a Bachelors degree in History, from Jackson University in Huntsville, Ala. He served San Diego County for many years as a member of the Franchise Tax Board. As a member of the community, he served the city of Vista and its residents through his undying support of the Optimist Club. Lt. Col. Muffi was a Career USMC Officer (1944-1975). He joined the Marine Corps as a private in 1944 at the age of 16. He rose through the enlisted ranks to Sergeant and was selected to become an officer. The Marine Corps continued to recognize him with successive promotions to the rank of Lt. Col. in 1970. He retired from the USMC in 1975. His list of achievements is diverse. One accomplishment of which he was particularly proud was setting up and managing the Vietnamese refugee program for the western United States. He was personally recognized for the success of this program by President Ronald Reagan. Domenick loved the community. He joined the Vista Optimist club around the time of his retirement. He held many roles in the Vista club, from Secretary, Treasurer, and Bulletin Publisher up to many repeat terms as the club President. He also held District roles as the Lt. Governor for Zone 1 and the Governor for the Cal. South District. He was recognized countless times for his dedication to the club and the community it served with such awards as Mr. Optimist and Mr. Irreplaceable. He was also very active with The Navy League here in San Diego County. He was an avid Military Historian and loved to give talks on the Civil War. He also relished the opportunity to discuss military history. A loyal and dedicated father, husband and friend, Domenick will be missed by all who knew him. Close friends will remember that he rarely smiled for photographs, and when called on this would simply say, "I am smiling!" Domenick was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Russo, Pittsburgh, PA in 1951.
