I started in Platoon 198 at PI in 1958. About a month in, I spent two weeks in the base hospital because of an unfortunate incident with my SDI. Upon release from the hospital, I was asked if I wanted to press charges against my DI. I was unofficially advised that, if I did press charges, it would probably be best if I took a discharge from the Corps. I thought about it and said I wanted to be a Marine and would not press charges. They ended up putting me in Platoon 344 which was only a week behind my original platoon.

I think somebody posted that they painted them outside of Recruit Receiving in the late 50's or early 60's.

The only link we use goes to TheBoot recruit paper. Their archives section (see menu on left) gives you platoon information, but it only goes back four years. Apparently they only keep records for four years before their dumped so to speak. There should be further information within the paper as to who to contact with your request, here' their link.

http://thebootandjetstream.com/

For the record, MCRD San Diego (Marine Corps Historical Society) does keep records going back to 1939 I believe. Their link is:

http://mcrdmuseumhistoricalsociety.org/

Hope that helps a little?

Thanks Gary. I looked at the link and it doesn't provide much historical information. Two things I've noticed regarding the platoon graduation pictures, 1) the date on the bottom left does not seem to agree with the date in the platoons graduation book and 2) do you have a contact name and number I can call to see about getting a picture ?

Series 2012 plts 2012/2013/2014/2015 graduated Oct.30,1968 from aug23,1968 S.D.I. Ssgt Vallancourt/Sgt Fagan/Sgt Kay 2nd battalion "D" company. They had just started building the new Base hospital which was directly across the street from my wood barracks. That was over 42 years ago !! WOW !!

Correction: The building they were building was STC bldg.not the base hospital,my old barracks ( 2nd Bn.) is gone and the "clothing Issue bldg. is there now on Panama street.

Drill instrutor From 1951-53

2nd battalion I think ? Sgt Malinowski,Charles. he was my uncle and he was a D.I. Early 50s.Come to think of it, My uncle had to have graduated early 40s from P.I.as he was at Iwo later on. And I personally have seen his graduation book. He retired from the Marines late 59 or 1960 Gary / Moz USMC 68-70 S/F

Platoon Commander S/Sgt G.A.Radmall JDI's Sgt A.J.Teson & Sgt J.P.Coen
We had another Sgt,I can't remember his name he was a very good teacher on
marching and drill, and exact movement of the platoon. He went into each hut to
work with smaller group to learn quicker. He was transferred after about a month
after plt was formed.I did see him when we graduated in April on the parade field.
Thanks, D.S.

PLT 3095 3rd Batt MCRD Parris Island Nov79-Jan80

*Reported to boot on the day our embassy was seized in Iran.

SDI: GySgt Leach DI: Sgt Salzman DI: SSGT Shadley DI: SSgt Cox
We also had another DI who was busted from Sgt to Cpl for hitting a recruit. He was removed from our PLT and I later saw him without a smokey cover so he may have been removed from the drill field. SSgt Cox replaced him.

Some years later I ran into SSgt Shadley at Lejuene and I was surprised that he remembered me. I always wondered about Sgt Salzman?

USMC birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years were all spent in boot... What the hell was I thinking? LOL
