Post Elmer L. Mills, 85, Kansas City, MO

Elmer L. Mills died May 21, 2010 after a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 24 at Church-Archer-Pasley Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Burial in Glenridge Cemetery in Liberty, MO. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 23 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Mills was born in Enterprise, KS near Abilene on August 17, 1924. He was the second child of four born to Louis J. Mills and Laura (Freeman) Mills. He was raised on the family farm and attended Enterprise, KS. schools. He competed in the Kansas State Basketball championship and the Kansas State track meet in 1942.
Mr. Mills proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during WWII; serving in operations in the Philippines and China.
After the war he attended The University of Kansas for a brief time. He was united in marriage to Jo Ann Markley on January 15, 1950. Into this union three sons were born. Mr. Mills spent most of his adult life in Liberty, MO. He was a professional truck driver and was awarded the "Driver of the Year" award for the state of Kansas in 1977. He drove professionally for 40 years and drove over 4,000,000 miles without a chargeable accident. Mr. Mills was involved in scouting and had all three sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He was an active member of the V.F.W. Post 4043 early in his retired years then went back to driving for local dealerships until just before his passing. He is remembered by his warm smile and friendly attitude. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Mills, his eldest son, Robert (Bob) L. Mills and two brothers, Earl Mills and Dale Mills. His survivors include two sons, Jerry Mills and Terry Mills both of Liberty, a granddaughter, Sydney R. Mills of Liberty, a sister, Rose Marie (Mills) Delimonte of Lincoln, NE and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Semper Fi!
