GySgt Roy F. Swift Jr. USMC (ret), 73, Madison, ME

MADISON -- Gunnery Sgt. Roy F. Swift Jr., Marine Corps retired, 73, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Togus. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Pittsfield on Nov. 11, 1935, the son of Roy and Glenys Swift Sr.

Roy proudly served his country in the Marine Corps for more than 20 years. He received many awards for his service, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Roy, lovingly known to his friends as Punky and Gunny, enjoyed his travel trailer. He wintered at Cabin Creek Campground in North Carolina and spent his summers at Two Rivers Campground in Skowhegan. He was a frequent visitor to Charrier's Restaurant in Skowhegan. He was an avid collector of coins and model cars and airplanes.

He is survived by his son, Brian Swift and his wife, Shannon, of Burnham; his daughter, Donna Swiderek and her husband, Dwight, of South Portland; 10 grandchildren, Daniel, Bethannie, Emmalee, Keren, Charlie, Johnathan, Joshua, Andrew, Marcus and Madison; his sister, Linda Swift, of Skowhegan; the mother of his children, Lauralee Swift, of South Portland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lorraine Swift Burns.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A memorial service with military honors will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Family and friends are welcome to stay for a time of refreshment to celebrate Roy's life immediately following the service. Interment will be private.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Association, P.O. Box 145447, Cincinnati, OH 45250-5447, in Roy's memory.
