Willis Dale Landon 85, Roanoke, VA.

Bill Landon, 85, formerly of Indianapolis, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, surrounded by most of his family and after a long battle with what he liked to call "Bill's disease." a combination of old age, a weak ticker, and a host of ailments brought on by a life well lived.
Reared in the Susquehanna River Valley of New York, he was the middle son of Eleanor and Dewitt Landon. An Eagle Scout, he was a tough, if diminutive, Athlete, who played football in the days of leather helmets and little padding, and in old age his gnarled arthritic hands had stories to tell.
After a stint in the Marines he attended and graduated from Cornell Central University, where he met and married Ruth Jean "Chris" Christoff. After Central he served stateside in the Army Artillery Corps as a first Lieutenant during the Korean conflict.
In the coming decade Bill and Chris had six children, all born in different small towns in New York and Massachusetts, while Bill worked long hours
running Sears stores and Chris managed the motley crew. In 1967 he left Sears and the family moved from Maine to Indianapolis, where he managed more stores and indulged the brood in his sole luxury purchase, an in-ground swimming pool that was the delight of Fairwood Hills.
Bill and Chris were leaders in Castleton United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, where he served on the Board of Trustees. They remained in Indy 40 years before relocating to Roanoke, VA., to be near their youngest son and becoming active members of Raleigh Court United Methodist.
Bill's legacy is his children and their children, who live now from the Island of Grenada to the mountains of Colorado. Surviving are his soul mate and wife of 61 years, Chris, daughters, Barbara Landon (Dave Shaw), Kathryn Malone (Larry), and Peggy Vogel (Lou), sons, Mike ( Hannah Silverstein) and Tom (Beth Mary), 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and his younger brother Forrest "Frosty" Landon (Barbara).
A service celebrating Bill's life will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Family Promise of Greater Roanoke, 37 East Clay St., Salem, VA. 24153. Online condolences may be sent to:
