Post Samuel Preston Williams, 93, Kansas City, MO

Samuel Preston Williams a noted Kansas City attorney and civic leader died at his home Sunday Mar. 4th, 2012. Born Oct. 31, 1918 in Excelsior Springs, MO to Van Oren Williams and Nora Edna McTaggart, Preston graduated from North Kansas City High School, Drake University in Des Moines, IA and Rockhurst College. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas City School of Law and was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Preston was a member of the Clay County Bar, Kansas City Bar and American Bar Assn. He also attended the KC Art Institute and took sketching classes under Thomas Hart Benton.

From 1941 to 1945, Preston served in the U.S. Marine Corps with the 3rd Marine Division and saw action in Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Guam, and Tarawa.

He was active in Civil Law practice in both State and Federal courts for over 60 years. Preston served as councilman, city attorney, and city counselor for North Kansas City for many years. He was also a former Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of Clay County, Missouri and former Assistant Attorney General under Governor John Dalton of Missouri. In 1960, Preston was named an honorary colonel by Governor Dalton. He served as President of the Clay County Bar Assn. in 1998 and was honored as Dean of the Bar by the Missouri Bar Assn. in 1999. Preston was also honored with a Resolution from the Supreme Court of Missouri in 2011. An avid outdoorsman, fisherman and duck hunter, Preston was elected national President of Ducks Unlimited in 1979 and 1980. He also served as Chairman of the Board in 1981 to 1983 and Chairman of the Executive Committee in 1984 and 1985. He was a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited United States, Mexico and Canada and Sponsor in Perpetuity. Preston was the first recipient of the S. Preston Williams Conservation Award given by the Greater KC Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Preston was a recipient of the NKC High School Alumni Hall of Fame award, the Alexander Doniphan Community Service Award, Grand Marshall of the NKC Snake Saturday Parade, member of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission, member of the Mayor's Corps of Progress and member of the Law Alumni Board of UMKC. Preston is survived by his spouse of 66 years the former Bernice Hargarten of Milwaukee, WI, and his brother, Van Oren Williams, Jr. and wife Myra Remley Williams of Green Valley, AZ. Preston is also survived by his two sons, Mark and his wife, Lisa, of Lawson, MO, and Tim and his wife Carra, of Covington, LA, his grandchildren, Justin Williams, Carra Jane and Connor Williams, Melissa and D.G. Rivers, Rocky and Ashleigh Hogan and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by, his sister, Juanita Williams Branstetter, two infant children, Mary Colleen, Patrick James, and a grandson Justin Hogan. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Thursday Mar. 8 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with a funeral Mass at 11 AM Mar. 9, 2012 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church 1357 N.E. 42nd Terrace, KC, MO. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ducks Unlimited @, or Three Rivers Hospice, P.O. Box 1937 Platte City, MO 64079.
