MSgt Luis Romero Jr. USMC (Ret.), 75, Kansas City, KS

MSgt Luis Romero USMC (Ret.), 75, Kansas City area, passed away March 28, 2005, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 1 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel Ave., Kansas City, KS. Burial with Military Honors will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday evening at D.W. Newcomer's Stine and McClure Chapel, 3235 Gillham Plaza, KCMO, with a Rosary being said at 7 p.m. and a Masonic Service to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Marine Corps Leagues, PO Box 4061, Overland Park, KS, 66204-0061. Luis Romero, Jr., was born October 11, 1929, in Kansas City, KS, the son of Luis M. and Lucy (Oliva) Romero. Luis attended John J. Ingells Elementary School, Central Junior High School, Argentine High School, and Bishop Ward High School. He earned his degree from St. Mary College at the age of 51. Luis was an avid sportsman who participated in sports throughout his life. Luis enlisted in the US Army in 1946, and the US Marine Corps in 1948, which became his great love. While serving his country during the Vietnam War, his exposure to Agent Orange was his last battle to be fought here at home. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1971, he was employed by the Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, KS, and graduated with honors from KCKS College and St. Mary's University in Lawrence, KS, with a bachelor's degree of science. He retired in 1992 as an Assistant Purchasing Agent from the Board of Public Utilities. He was preceded in death by his parents Luis M. Sr. and Lucy O. Romero and many brothers, Marines lost in Korea and Vietnam War. He is survived by his beloved wife Aurora S. Romero; daughter Maria L. Romero, Mission, KS; two grandsons, William Robert and Cody Luis Kemple; five brothers, Margarito (Porky) Romero, Kansas City, KS, Frank Romero, Parkville, MO, Henry Romero, Robert Romero, Kansas City, KS, and Anthony Romero, Gladstone, MO; sister Teresa Romero, Kansas City, KS; and loving and caring uncles, aunts, cousins, sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces. Luis was a member of Delaware Masonic Lodge where he was a Past Master and Area Deputy Grand Master. He was also involved with the Order of Eastern Star Sincerity 295 Worthy Patron, commandant of Larry Oppenheimer Marine Corps Detachment at the present time. After his retirement he devoted his time to his grandsons. Luis leaves many friends and loved ones who made his life such a joy. He believed deeply in God and country, and his greatest wish was to be remembered as one of The Few, The Proud, The Marines. Luis was also very proud of his family. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the care provided by the VA Hospital and staff of KC Hospice, Sister Servants of Mary, Marine Corps League's of KS and MO, faithful members of Blessed Sacrament Church and St. Pius X of Mission, SMMC surgery department and members of the community of Mission.
