Post Michael 'Mike' Edmonds, 56, Kansas City, MO

EDMONDS Mike Edmonds joined his Savior and loved ones that have gone on before him on Friday, April 16, 2010, "just in time to have lunch with his mom and dad." Mike was born on February 25, 1954, in Kansas City, Kansas, and with the exception of his time in the military, was a life-long resident of the Kansas City Area. He was the youngest of three children born to Lloyd and Lois (Bounds) Edmonds. On December 31, 1976 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Judy. To this union three children were born, Mason, Matthew, and Megan. The majority of people grow up, not Mike. He remained young at heart and came of age in Kansas City, Kansas, and attended Wyandotte High School. He established himself as the premier story and joke teller at an early age and never failed to draw a crowd to hear what he had to say.
It's been said that "Once a Marine always a Marine". For Mike, even as a child, he was a Marine. There was no question about the path his life would lead. Ever faithful and patriotic, he joined The Marines before he graduated from high school in the summer of 1972 and served his country for sixteen years. Mike was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and operations in the Philippines. His service continued for an additional sixteen years as a veterans advocate with The U. S. Veterans Administration. One of his greatest accomplishments, and his life's mission was assisting his fellow veterans in receiving the benefits that they deserved. Mike's fellow workers at The VA knew that he was the "Go To Guy," also known as "Marine One." If there was a Veteran that was entangled in a mountain of red tape, Mike was the one to get them through. Mike retired from The VA in 2007.
Mike was a life time member of The Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans, and served fifteen years as Commanding Officer of The Midwest Young Marines, in title only, as it was ran by his XO so he could work with the children.
He was also "The Military Advisor" for the Adrian Optimist Club.
Mike often spoke of people who were "His Blood". Family was the most important thing to him and this was very evident to
anyone that ever observed his interaction with his family. Mike's favorite past times included football, fishing, camping, hunting, oldies music, Blue Grass Music and Festivals, and studying history. These passions were all things that he shared and passed along to his children. Mike is survived by Judy Edmonds, his gray haired bride of 33 years; son, Mason Edmonds and wife
Rebecca, and grandchildren Mikey, Payton and Anna Marie; son, Matthew Edmonds and wife Maeaja and grandchildren Tyler and Madison; daughter, Megan Potter and husband Chris, grandson Jacob; his older brother, Raymond "Butch" Fenton Edmonds, and a host of family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Lois Edmonds; and sister, Becky
Roller. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 20, 7-9 p.m., at Floral Hill Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 12 Noon, also at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Midwest Young Marines, 8227 East 134th Street, Grandview, MO 64030 or to Kansas City Hospice, 9221 Ward Pkwy., Kansas City, MO 64114. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at (Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel,
7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., KCMO 64133, 816-353-1218).
