Stockton, CA

Eugene N. Thompson

Jan. 18, 1917 - Mar. 11, 2009

Col. Eugene N. Thompson USMC, Ret, passed away at home on March 11th at the age of 92. Born in Minnesota on July 18, 1917, Eugene and his family left their homestead for Eugene, Oregon, where his father worked as an educator. During the Great Depression Eugene, the youngest of five siblings, moved to California with his parents to live with his older sister's family. Upon graduating high school, Eugene joined the newly formed California Conservation Corps to earn money for college. He entered UC Berkeley in 1936 and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. During college Eugene met "the girl next door", Mary Tangney, a red headed Irish high school student who years later would become his wife. Upon graduation from Berkeley in 1940 he joined the Marine Corps. From Camp LeJeune, North Carolina he sent for Mary in 1943 and his 20 year old bride traveled across country by train to be married. Surviving many battles in the Pacific during WWII, Eugene returned home to start his family in peacetime. Continuing his career as a Marine officer, he attended Naval Intelligence School in 1947 and by 1950 was inducted into the fledgling Central Intelligence Agency. Now a father of three, Eugene was stationed in Japan, France, Washington DC and Okinawa over the next 15 years. His family traveled the worked at his side and during his time off Eugene enjoyed traveling with them visiting the sites of the Fare East and Europe. He was stationed as a Marine officer while working for CIA acquiring "assets" and running operations in Communist China and Russia. Awards and commendations during Eugene's military career included Expert Marksmanship in pistol and rifle, Army Commendation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal WWII and the National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from military life in 1964 Eugene moved to California and worked for Univ. of Calif. Livermore Radiation Laboratory. His security clearance for operations in their Weapons Development program wasn't a problem. Retiring from "The Lab" in 1984, Eugene enjoyed RV-ing with family and friends, water skiing, fishing, and gardening. They welcomed wives and husbands and grandchildren into their growing family and hosted Holiday gatherings, keeping loved ones close. Eugene joins his darling Mary, loving wife of 65 years, who preceded him in death just three months earlier in December 2008. He is survived by his son Eric (Nancy) Thompson of OR, daughter Lynda Moss (Greg Dixson) of Acampo and Meadow Creek, BC and daughter Rebecca Werner (Ron) of Lodi. Grandfather of Cindy (Scott) Sweat of Acampo, Alison Moss of San Francisco, Sarah (Jeremy) Gordon of Tracy, Jonathan Werner of Chico, Daniel Werner of Los Angeles and Stacy Werner of San Diego. Two great grandchildren who brought joy to his final years are Madison and Brandon Sweat of Acampo. Eugene will be laid to rest with full military honors in the Garden of Trees Veteran's Section in Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, on Friday, May 1st, at 3:00pm. Memorial service will be officiated by Pastor Jack Dawson. Please sign the guest book online at www.cherokeememorial.com.
