Philip Sheridan Payne USMC (ret), 79, Leavenworth, IN

Philip Sheridan Payne, 79, of Leavenworth, Ind., formerly of Wythe County, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.C. McPeak officiating. Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery with American Legion Post 9 conducting graveside military rites. He was born Feb. 15, 1930, in Paynesville, W.Va., son of the late Clarence Edward and Virgie Ellen Wagoner Payne. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps with over 21 years of service. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Etta Marie Moore and Wilma L. Finley; and two brothers, Clifford E. Payne and Roland Payne. Survivors include six children, Wendell Payne of Cincinnati, Ohio, Michael Payne of Louisville, Ky., Sharon Payne Smith of Lanesville, Ind., Patricia Payne Staley of Dayton, Ohio, John Payne of Greenville, Ind., and David Payne of Georgetown, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Freda Smith of Tazewell, Wanda Muncy of Princeton, W.Va., Sylvia Fern Akers and Theodocia Payne, both of Ivanhoe; three brothers, Hubert D. Payne of Ivanhoe, Earl Payne of North Carolina and Chester W. Payne of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
