Gunnery Sgt. Jesse D. Farmer, USMC Retired

On Dec. 27, 2008, Jesus called home a fine and faithful Marine to serve with Him in his kingdom in heaven.

Jesse Farmer, 78, of Jacksonville passed away peacefully at Liberty Commons Assisted Living after a three-year battle with esophageal and lung cancer and Alzheimer's.

A funeral service will be held at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Va., on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joyce Carlisle officiating. Interment will be held at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Va., following the service. The Bluefield, Va., Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 9696 and the Pocahontas, Va., American Legion No. 14 will conduct graveside military rites.

Jesse enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and always knew how to make everyone feel welcome and loved. Jesse enjoyed fishing, football, baseball, bowling, church, reading, good old movies and telling stories. He was a loving husband and father, devoted to his children. He resided in Jacksonville from the late 1960s until he retired to Bluefield, Va., in 1991. He returned to Jacksonville in 2006.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Chizuru "Sally" Farmer (1997); his father, Jessie Farmer (1930); his mother, Mae Browning Farmer (1965); his oldest brother, William Ray Farmer (1944); his sisters, Marie Farmer Morgret (2005) and Fannie Farmer (2006); and his twin sister, Pearl (1991).
