Fred D. Johnston, Sr., 86, Chambersburg, PA

Fred D. Johnston Sr., 86, of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, and formerly of 765 Blanchard Avenue, Chambersburg, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at his residence.

Born April 23, 1915 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Grover and Bertha S. Meyers Johnston. He was married to Mary Jane Nitterhouse Johnston on Nov. 14, 1936. Mrs. Johnston died Jan. 21, 1986.

Mr. Johnston was a 1935 graduate of the Waynesboro High School, Waynesboro, where he played as guard on the school basketball team. Mr. Johnston had been employed as a Boring Mill Operator at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro. He later worked at Nitterhouse Concrete Products, Chambersburg until his retirement in 1977. He was a corporal in the U.S. Marines, where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.

Mr. Johnston was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. He excelled in all sports during and after his time in high school. He was captain of the former Waynesboro Wahian's football team and played as quarterback and halfback. In his younger days he enjoyed archery, golf and hunting. He also enjoyed helping other people and can be remembered as a honest man of high integrity and a kind and gentle spirit. Mr. Johnston was a life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 V.F.W. and B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 600, both of Chambersburg. He had been named "Elk of the Year" numerous times.

Surviving is a daughter, Sharan K. Carbaugh of Chambersburg; a son Daniel Johnston of Chambersburg; a sister Wilma Stephey of Waynesboro; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Armatha Ludwig and Louella Richardson; and one brother, John Johnston.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 9 at the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home. The Rev. David L. Keener officiated. Military Graveside Service at Parklawns Memorial Gardens was conducted by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 V.F.W. Honor Guard. Members of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 600 conducted a service Friday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Walden Unit at Menno Haven, 2075 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201
