William Olaf Mitchell Jr. USMC (ret), 80, Texarkana, TX

Mr. William Olaf Mitchell Jr. passed away Monday, Feb. 4, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Mitchell lived in Blessing, Texas, and Advance and was formerly from Newport and Texarkana, Texas. He was born March 12, 1928, in Nevada County, Ark., to the late W.O. Mitchell Sr. and Audie Lee Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was retired from the U.S. Civil Service and with 30 years of service from the U.S. Marine Corps. Due to his years of faithful and active service with the Marine Corps through World War II, Korea and the Vietnam campaigns, Mr. Mitchell' s service time was called a "Triple Threat." He was active with several organizations through the military including the VFW, Fleet Reserve, was a charter and senior member of the Motor Transport Association of the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Okinawa, Japan, A.F.&A.M. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Phyllis Ann Mitchell; a sister, Geneva Overton; and a brother, Charles Leo Mitchell. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Zula Mae Johnston Mitchell of the home; children Brenda (Terry) Hammonds of Dunedin, Fla.; Michael (Charlene) Mitchell of Fort Worth, Texas; Mary "Ginni" (C.L.) Morrow of Blessing; and A. Patrick "Pat" (Michelle) Mitchell of Advance; grandchildren Mitchell McKenzie, William O. Mitchell III, Max Anthony Culpepper, Jeff Alan Mitchell, Terry Ann Duhamel, Lauren Elizabeth Mitchell and Alex Thomas "Dink" Mitchell; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Estelle Mullins of Texarkana, Ark., and Alva Talley of Little Rock, Ark. His funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in Gentry Family Chapel, with the Rev. Kenny Gooden and the Rev. Chris Hauser officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Interment will be Sunday, Feb. 10, at Memorial Gardens in Texarkana, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor' s choice.
