John P. Garman USMCR (ret), 83, Granger, IN

John P. Garman, 83, of Granger, Indiana, passed away in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center of South Bend on Friday, March 13, 2009, of natural causes. John was born October 14, 1925, to the late Carrow and Sunshine Leona (Zimpleman) Garman in Kewanna, Indiana. On July 26, 1947, John was united in marriage to the former Ms. Louise Nyers at Our Lady of Hungary Parish in South Bend, Indiana. They were married for over 61 years. Louise survives along with their sons, Robert John (Joyce) Garman of South Bend, James Alan (Ruth) Garman of Granger and John Patrick (Susan) Garman of Osceola. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Julie (Edgar) Abad, Aaron Garman, Selina (Jason) Skinner and Andrew Garman. John is also survived by his great-granddaughter, Hannah Abad. He is survived as well by his brother, Harold (Mary Beth) Garman of Portage, Michigan. John was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles, Herbert, Hugh, Mary Jane and Harriet. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today, March 16, in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, where a Rosary service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, with Rev. Bill Schooler presiding. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. John was a 1943 graduate of Mishawaka High School. John was drafted by the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after high school and served during WWII and the Korean War era. After his active duty, John continued in the Marine Corps Reserves, serving his country for over 30 years. John was a cook while enlisted, and enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. He was especially known for his navy bean soup, vegetable soup and baked ham. John also enjoyed working in his yard and garden, as well as around his house. A member of the Knights of Columbus of South Bend and Moose Lodge #58, John bowled leagues with both organizations for many years. John was also a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church of Elkhart, and he and his wife enjoyed singing in the church choir. John was very fond of animals.
