Cool An FYI for new users

I've noticed that many users that surf into this website often try to do things that only registered members can do. Posting to a forum thread, sending Personal Messages and a number of other things. Rather than waste time attempting things that will eventually come back and tell you you can't do it because you don't have a registered login, register first.

We do a pretty good job of protecting our members from phishing and spammers. They do try to register here but usually get clipped and blocked before they can do anything. As soon as we see one, we clip his/her login and then block the IP they came in on. We also block the email ID either by blocking the actual email ID or even blocking all emails from certain email servers. We've even blocked a few "bots" that surf in here to collect information. So, if you are a spam pill or porn pusher, don't bother as you won't accomplish much except to waste some time.

Unhappy Why is it that spammers love Marine websites?

You wouldn't believe how many spammer IP's and emails I have blocked but they still try. It's also amazing how many different web servers are out there that cater primarily to spammers. Russian IP's seem to be the worst but I've seen many others. I think we are doing a pretty good job on keeping them out but it's a daily chore to block new ones.

Good idea jack

in addition, I've noticed on "other" forums people attack each other not to mention posts about other members on other forums....keep up the good work Jack, we wouldn't want to see that here either right?

Cool Actually, we have very few problems with members here

We generally don't have any political posts or anti-U.S. posts. Any firefights we've had filter over from other forums. When that happens, the threads are moved to the Moderator's Forum and the posters are notified to take their differences off of the forums. We probably are not as easy as people controlling other forums. We don't tolerate people that post just to get a rise out of other people and quickly get rid of them. If a post smells, then it probably should be flushed.

Well that's good Jack. I'll bet Administrators/Monitors from other boards go to one they don't monitor and make the posts described...glad to here it doesn't happen here and you guys (Admin) are true to your word. Hypocrisy is a bad attribute.

Thanks for clearing that up Jack

Sites looking good Jack.

Maybe you guys should have the option to disable PM's from unsolicited sources.

I had (notice I said "had") the same identical problem at my place and there is a solution which I believe is much easier to utilize as opposed to banning IP's, emails and all that stuff.

I too was literally bombarded with spammers and I went thru all that ban this and that. Now our staff no longer worries about them and they can "try" to play all the games they want. Like you stated earlier Jack ... "their doing no more than wasting time".

There are more traps and other devices on the internet than have been planted by those
who are willing to use any means to undermine efforts to be straight forward and forthright. That is the main reason we as Marines have such a strong bond, unique and
special within our shared service responsibilities. Let's all work to keep that bond strong and unique.
