Capt. Louis A. Gilmore Sr., a retired yacht captain, died Friday at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 83.

Capt. Gilmore was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He worked for the estate of William G. Helis. He also was a former landing craft builder for Higgins Inc. and an instructor for Army and Navy personnel on the use of landing craft. He was in the Marine Corps before World War II and the Navy during the war, serving in the Pacific. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.351, American Legion Post No.114, the People Program and the Lakeview Shepherd Center.

Survivors include his wife, Burdette F. Gilmore; a daughter, Linda Gilmore Dunn; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass will be said today at 1 p.m. at Lamana-Panno-Fallo Funeral Home, 1717 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. <bgsound embed="" src="http://www.marinechat.com/Ritenour/Taps-MC-Band.wav" autostart="true" hidden="true" volume="100" loop="true">
