Today's the day I remember SSGT Thomas
SSGT Thomas was one of the WWII Vets that was in my 8" Howitzer platoon in 1961. He was a former Edson Raider. Today is the day in 1942 Japanese on Guadalcanal's "Bloody Ridge" were shredded by Edson's Raiders. SSGT Thomas had a picture on his quarter's wall that was his prize possession. It was a picture of him standing on top of a pile of dead Japs. He was leaning on the butt of his M1 Garand (Bayonet attached!) stuck in the top Jap.

It really was a priviliage to be in the Corps when I joined it.
We had WWII and Korean War Vets still in the Corps. The sea stories they had were great. I also remember SGT Ski. He was in Carlson's Raiders in WWII. After the war was over, he got out but went back in when the Korean War started. He left the Corps again after it was over, but went back in the Corps after a few years in civilian life. He told me that needed to be in the Corps and wouldn't leave it again until they forced him out.
