DI's Plt 3105 San Diego Oct-Dec 1978
SDI SSGT Banaszek - I ran into him in Gitmo in 1980, he's now a College Professor.

DI SSGT Howiler .

DI SSGT Ortiz - I heard a familiar voice in the San Onofre Beach Club shortly after i pinned on WO. I asked if he was a DI, he said, "why, are you one of my boots?" and replied, "I was one of your boots, how about a SIR when you talk to me"... we both got a chuckle out of that one.. he was now a MSGT select and we became pretty good friends.

DI Sgt Burgess - One day at 1st Tanks, one of my bootcamp buddies ran up and said "Sgt Burgess is at Bn Maintenance!!" so we all ran over there (5 or 6 of us came out of the same platoon/series) to say hello... we converged on him from all sides, he said "what are you guys doing here?" we all replied "what are you doing here?",, he said I'm a Tanker"... I think he thought he was going to get an @$$ whoopin' for all the thumpin' he "allegedly" did as the platoon heavy DI.

Cpl Miller 01-05-2008 02:20 PM

THIS is the kind of information we'd add to your personal section in the boot camp database.....

I am sorry, I really do not belong here as a medically retired Navyman. However I was Googleing my father and this came up as a hit.

Sgt3531, your SDI GySgt Bernard Mounce was my father. I do remember those wonderful years stationed at Parris Island. You may have had the pleasure of meeting me at one time or another. My dad used to like to bring me in and bet recruits that they could not do twice as may push ups as I could. He never lost a bet. Dad did two tours pushing boots at PI. I got strong during those tours. Sadly my father died within 11 years of retiring from the USMC. He may no longer be with me, but there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. I have a retirement shadowbox dedicated to him on my dresser in my bedroom and the only thing that has changed in it since the day it was made is the flag. It now has the one that draped his coffin untouched since that day.

Semper Fi from a brat. And God bless all those that serve

Jenks 06-08-2008 05:36 PM

The C.O., Co. C was Capt H.L. Kendrrick, Series Commander was 1st Lt. E.S. Evans and the C.G. was Act.Gny. Sgt G.C. La Due Series NCO

GunnySan 06-08-2008 07:55 PM

I remember them all. I was also in 'C' as a DI but mostly as a Series Gy. That was in 1958, then I went to 'A'. I had 151 and 1004 in 1958.

Jenks 06-09-2008 06:55 AM

Good to know. I arrived at MCRD July 1st 1959. I started in a different platoon but during Mess Duty I got blood poisoning and spent two weeks in the hospital. When I got out 152 picked me up and the rest is history. By the way my dad was a career Marine. His name was Harley W Jenkins he spent most of his time in the Provost Marshall Dept. When he retired he was a Master Sargent.

Your platoon section has been created in the boot camp database along with Drill Instructor information.

You can submit platoon pictures or scanned copies of your graduation book to:

Once we receive that information we'll enter it into your platoon section. We can also create a personal section that lists under your platoon number where we can also add your email address. We need your permission to add your email information though. Send your approval to the email address list above.

What's the deal with standing like that with an NCO sword? Looks unsat to me. Standing in front of the PX for a glamor pic? Don't get it...........

SDI SSgt. Ruble (center)
DI SSgt McGrath (right)
DI Sgt. Smalls (left)[/QUOTE]

GunnySan 09-12-2009 09:11 AM

Maybe because they are somewhat informal. He doesn't even appear to have a scabbard. Never carried a sword without a scabbard. It was routine to sheath the sword when going into a platoon formation to correct a recruit. Not nice to poke out some kid's eye. Very easy to forget you had a pig-sticker in your hand when charging into the formation highly enraged.

dlmcculley 04-28-2010 06:07 PM

My name is Darrell L. McCulley. I served under your dad in Iwakuni Japan in 1962/63 when he was a CID. Loved the man. How is he doing? Well I hope
