Was I at Parris Island 1963?

Yes I was in the 1st Battalion, the 1st barracks on the left of the parade deck
the 2nd deck on the left. Platoon 142. My Platoon book lists our training dates as 2 July-13 Sept. Did I graduate on the 13th? I bel;ieve so, that was a Friday and we just came back from PI a couple of weeks ago and we attended a graduation on the Friday when we were there.

Cpl Mawson, have you had a chance to go back to PI?

Our old 2-story barracks have been replaced with 3-story brick buildings.
Sure as hell wouldn't want to be a recruit on the 3rd deck.

They kept one of the old wooden, white barracks to use as an administrative building. I had the priviliage to experience the wood barracks while in Platoon 198 in 1958. After being put in the hospital by an unfortunate incident a month into training, I was set back into Platoon 344 and experienced the comforts of 16 man Quonset huts.

PSG CARTER, I was in Platoon 144 from 1 July thru 13 September 1963. Sounds like some of us were in the same barracks.

I was also in Plt 342 at PI from June to Sept of 1963. Sr DI was W. Roebuck, Jr Di's were Sgt Burt and Sgt Freed. . After 3 years as a reservist, I went regular MC for 4 more years, was a Sgt for last 3 years, did Vietnam 67-68. Finished my tour in 1970, back to NY, married, worked, 3 kids, retired to AZ in 2008. May go back to NY, wife misses it. Became born again Christian about 30 years ago, write Christian folk music, play Fingerstyle acoustic guitar. That's it. God bless.

Plt 342, 3rd Recruit Trng Bn, PI, South Carolina

what a mixed bag of recruits we were. We had guys from Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, and some other places I can't recall. I was with a group of 6 recruits from NY, Long Island, and NYC. We tried hard to please the DI's but usually managed to get them pissed off. We had a lot of fights among ourselves after hours, as scores were settled with fists. The toughest of all of us were three guys from Louisiana who just loved to throw hands. They were unbeatable, really tough, especially the leader. The NY guys were mostly easy going, despite the NY reputation. Most of the fights seemed to be between Texans and Louisiana boys. What a tumultuous 12 weeks. But we all graduated and there was more friendliness and few conflicts by the time we neared the end of basic. After basic, Geiger was easy, and infantry Trng, night compass exercises in the North Carolina woods were actually fun for me. I spent the years between 1963-66 as a active reservist, while going to college, then dropped out and went active USMC 4 years doing a tour in Nam 67-68, enlistment ended in 1970. Back to NY, marriage, kids, work, finish college, retired to AZ. You could say boot camp in Plt 342 was a pivotal and memorable experience.

parris island 1963

I reported in on Feb 27 1963, graduated end of May. I was in platoon 316.The one thing I liked about PI was the rifle range, I like to shoot, still do. I did 7 months in Danang, from march 65 to sept, 65, aside from that, I was a lucky guy, lots of travel. I got out in 1967 as cpl. One more thing, I am looking for yearbook plt. 316 1963. My name is John A. D'Aiuto GOD BLESS you all. My email is cpljadusmc@hotmail.com

PI 1963 - Company C, platoon 181

1October-17December, 1963. Platoon 181.
I remember it well, especially the sand flea that bit my ear off while at attention in front of the mess hall.
Sgt. Mallard took over as senior DI from SSgt. Johnson early in our training. Cpl. Camp and Sgt. Cannon completed our DI staff...good bunch of marines.

Now I'm a member of the Marine Corps League in Knoxville, TN. ...enjoy the activities, especially the pistol and rifle matches. Love talking with marines from WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and the Middle East. Too damn many wars, though!
