LtCol Charles "Charlie, Chuck" Henry Black USMC (ret), 81, Dumfries, VA
Lt. Col. Charles (Charlie, Chuck) Henry Black, USMC/Retired, age 81, died on May 8, 2008 following a battle with cancer.

He was born on August 24, 1927 in San Angelo, Texas. He attended Roosevelt High School in Fresno, California and graduated from Fresno State, Fresno, California in 1953.

Chuck joined the Marine Corps at age 17 and served in World War II. He also served in Korea and Vietnam. Major Black was awarded the Silver Star for his performance as the Operations Officer with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines during Operation Swift near Que Son, Vietnam. He performed many heroic acts during his time as an officer.

Chuck also received the Letter of Appreciation, Vietnam Service Medal w/two Stars, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/two Gold Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/one device, Bronze Star w/V, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Silver Star Medal, RVAF MUC of Gallantry cross w/ Frame and Palm.

After retirement, Chuck joined Nationwide Insurance as an agent and later went into management. Chuck's favorite hobby was golfing and he spent many enjoyable hours out on the golf course with his golf buddies, the Montclair Senior Golfers. In the last five years he achieved two "hole-in-ones". His other interests included crosswords puzzles and spending time with his toy poodle Amanda Jane.

His son, Carl Curtis (Kurt) Black, as well as, his mother and father Gaines and Lena Black of Los Banos, Ca. preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 51 and a half years, Martha Neal Hodgin Black of Dumfries.

The family will receive friends on Monday, May 12, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City where Life Celebration services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. The interment will take place on Thursday May 15, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Virginia with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Potomac Hospital or your favorite charity.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mountcastle Funeral Home, Dale City.
