SDI SSGT Banaszek - I ran into him in Gitmo in 1980, he's now a College Professor.

DI SSGT Howiler .

DI SSGT Ortiz - I heard a familiar voice in the San Onofre Beach Club shortly after i pinned on WO. I asked if he was a DI, he said, "why, are you one of my boots?" and replied, "I was one of your boots, how about a SIR when you talk to me"... we both got a chuckle out of that one.. he was now a MSGT select and we became pretty good friends.

DI Sgt Burgess - One day at 1st Tanks, one of my bootcamp buddies ran up and said "Sgt Burgess is at Bn Maintenance!!" so we all ran over there (5 or 6 of us came out of the same platoon/series) to say hello... we converged on him from all sides, he said "what are you guys doing here?" we all replied "what are you doing here?",, he said I'm a Tanker"... I think he thought he was going to get an @$$ whoopin' for all the thumpin' he "allegedly" did as the platoon heavy DI.

I am sorry, I really do not belong here as a medically retired Navyman. However I was Googleing my father and this came up as a hit.

Sgt3531, your SDI GySgt Bernard Mounce was my father. I do remember those wonderful years stationed at Parris Island. You may have had the pleasure of meeting me at one time or another. My dad used to like to bring me in and bet recruits that they could not do twice as may push ups as I could. He never lost a bet. Dad did two tours pushing boots at PI. I got strong during those tours. Sadly my father died within 11 years of retiring from the USMC. He may no longer be with me, but there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him. I have a retirement shadowbox dedicated to him on my dresser in my bedroom and the only thing that has changed in it since the day it was made is the flag. It now has the one that draped his coffin untouched since that day.

Maybe because they are somewhat informal. He doesn't even appear to have a scabbard. Never carried a sword without a scabbard. It was routine to sheath the sword when going into a platoon formation to correct a recruit. Not nice to poke out some kid's eye. Very easy to forget you had a pig-sticker in your hand when charging into the formation highly enraged.

Hi All, Every time I enter Y.F.P.'s I find something from my time in the corps.
I was reading Sgt Kenndy's remarks about boot camp and noticed one of his DI's was also mine. I see that his S/sgt Teson was also mine in an earlier platoon.I was Plt 305 and then Sgt Teson E-5 he was a stickler on plt
marching no errors and uniformity. While in boot under Sgt Teson one afternoon during one of his training on the little grinder,I lost it. You all had it
sometime during those many weeks, brain fart.We were getting instructions on
dress right dress while in formation.Sgt Teson in front of the plt drooped his
arm staight to his side and in a smurking way said, And I don't want to see any of this shit. It hit me funny and I started laughing and couldn't stop,he
saw me and came through the rankes and started yelling and hitting me which made me laugh more and louder.Pretty soon the recruits around started laughing and finally so did Sgt Teson. He finally threw me out of the
Plt and made me sit under the bleachers until I could control myself.15 Min.
I saw his name and recalled that day, like it was yesterday.Dick Shewmake

It's called Ceremonial Parade Rest with the sword, Marine Barracks in DC used it. Some of the Regt. CO's (Col's Symolon and Holladay) had done a tour at 8th & I and pushed Ceremonial Parade Rest into use around MCRD San Diego late 1988-90 timeframe. After 1990 it spread like an epedimic.

The DI Team photo has always been standard at MCRD San Diego for every platoon that goes through.

Never heard the term!

In my days a "Heavy" was a staff sgt or above. A "Rocker" is the stripe underneath the top 3 stripes. Heavy also was referred to as anyone who re-upped (renlisted) usually a staff sgt or above and were called "Heavies" much as the term "Lifer".
