Yo Buckstripes!

As a Old Salt MARINE, you were issued a military serial number, and so was I, in 1959. Today, the Young MARINES use their social security numbers. Don't think the ID thieves can get much info from our assigned military numbers, but it is good advice by you that no young MARINE give out his S/S # if that is what they use for the MARINES. GOOD HEADS UP INFO. OOOOOHHHRAH!

No"Graduation' books, just a platoon photo. Our question to others back then was 'When did you go through Boot Camp?' or 'When did you get out of Boot camp?'; not 'graduate'. There was no ceremony or other activity to mark the day. We were just told to get our emblems out of our lockerboxes and put them on our pisscutters.

edit-
"Graduation Books" probably started about 1957 or so. I was at MCRD SD in '58 and we held graduation ceremonies at the theater. There were books then. I believe the Josten company produced them. the covers were white background, later red.

I stepped on the yellow foot prints the evening of 29 Sept 78, and graduated on 21 Dec 78.

I'll see if my scanner will handle the book, if not, i'll think about sending it in.

I've got a 1977 plt 3100 book that I found at the local swap meet that i'll donate to the cause.

Just a heads up Marine,

If your scanner gives you fits you can send your book to;

Yellow Footprints
PO Box 341
Orangevale, Ca 95662

Make sure to include return postage so we can get your book back to you in short order. I'd also send it registered mail so you can track it. I will say though, we've never lost a book, butt I wouldn't take any chances.

Make sure to also denote that the second book is being donated. When these books are entered into the database we do like to over your name on the front page of the book, IF that's ok.
"Courtesy of drfender"

Also remember to give us your permission to create a personal section for you. This personal section list under your platoon number by your name (full name). With your permission we can also enter your email address for ease of contact. Any personal boot camp picture your family took can also be added to your personal section.

Bottom line, this is YOUR historical database so use it to store what ever boot camp information you want your family and friends to access.

I started in Platoon 198 at PI in 1958. About a month in, I spent two weeks in the base hospital because of an unfortunate incident with my SDI. Upon release from the hospital, I was asked if I wanted to press charges against my DI. I was unofficially advised that, if I did press charges, it would probably be best if I took a discharge from the Corps. I thought about it and said I wanted to be a Marine and would not press charges. They ended up putting me in Platoon 344 which was only a week behind my original platoon.

The only link we use goes to TheBoot recruit paper. Their archives section (see menu on left) gives you platoon information, but it only goes back four years. Apparently they only keep records for four years before their dumped so to speak. There should be further information within the paper as to who to contact with your request, here' their link.

http://thebootandjetstream.com/

For the record, MCRD San Diego (Marine Corps Historical Society) does keep records going back to 1939 I believe. Their link is:

Hope that helps a little?

Thanks Gary. I looked at the link and it doesn't provide much historical information. Two things I've noticed regarding the platoon graduation pictures, 1) the date on the bottom left does not seem to agree with the date in the platoons graduation book and 2) do you have a contact name and number I can call to see about getting a picture ?

Hendrix. SSgt D. D. Drew, Sgt James C. Guessford. I've been doing an internet search for any info on Plt 137 and anyone who may have been in that Plt. So far I've hit a big ZERO. Interesting. Yearbooks must have been a haphazard thing prior to the 50s. My brother enlisted a year after me and I know he didn't have one. It's also possible that the DIs weren't required to push them. ;)

I am not sure they even had platoon graduation books before the 50"s. Of course we know that had platoon pictures but books were another story. The one frustrating thing about the books from the 50's is the lack of dates of graduation.

The lack of dates is why we have so many in the clasification of UNKNOWN MONTH in our database. The only way to even get close to the date of a book is to look at the first few pages where they talk about a base commander being at the base during certain years.

GunnySan
