CAMP PENDLETON – Without a doubt, it's appropriate to call the late Marine Cpl. Jason S. Clairday a hero. But it's more complex to pinpoint why. .
Marines from his squad agree that he's a hero because he saved their lives. Military commanders declare him a hero because he embodies the Marine Corps spirit. The woman who helped raise him says he's a hero because of his Christian faith.
Those were some of the reasons cited yesterday during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton. Clairday's mother, Nancy McWilliams, and other family members received the Navy Cross on his behalf.
