Actor Kevin Bacon, who last portrayed a Marine captain in the 1992 movie “A Few Good Men,” will play another Marine in an upcoming HBO movie.
In “Taking Chance,” Bacon will portray real-life Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, who was attached to Manpower and Reserve Affairs at Quantico, Va. In 2004, Strobl was assigned to escort the body of PFC Chance Phelps home to Dubois, Wyo.
Phelps was posthumously awarded the Bronze star and a promotion to lance corporal after he and his convoy were ambushed outside Ramadi, Iraq. Phelps covered the withdrawl of his convoy with a machine gun until he was fatally wounded by enemy fire; an awesome one-man, last-man stand.
Strobl, who wrote, “Taking Chance,” is co-writing the script for the HBO production. The movie delves into Strobl taking responsibility for Phelp’s body at Dover (Del.) Air Force Base, and escorting it home. Filming will begin this summer, and HBO expects to broadcasting the production in 2008.
