Been busy scanning books this last week. Entered a number of books from the 50's, and have a bunch of books to scan from Parris Island from the 60's.
Should have the 60's books scanned over the next couple of days.
For those that don't know the process in scanning these books which takes between 30 and 45 minutes for each book here's an idea how it goes.
Books purchased by YFP have the recuit pages that includes the DI page scanned then entered into the database.
Members books that are mailed to us take a little different approuch.
Because we can't keep members books ALL pages are scanned starting from the back of the book that includes the platoon training photo's, up to and including the DI page.
Each book has the new "Courtesy Of" statement applied to the front cover of each book. This way you know who supplied each book.
In most cases where scanning older graduation books from the 50's and 60's the print contrast is rather light in color. In those cases each page is run threw photo enhancer software to adjust each page that brings out the clarity of the black and white pictures.
Each page of the book has to have it's size reduced and formating changed to a .jpeg file type before it can be entered into the boot camp database.
Most, if not all books are returned to their owners within two weeks or soon after.
Platoon photo's scanned are also run threw photo software when contrast is an issue. We also overlay the "Courtesy Of" statement and any other information provided by the member. In the case where a Marine denotes his/she location within the platoon picture we overlay their name on their picture within the group shot.
Just thought you'd like to know what the process is in getting graduation books into our database.
Carry On Marines!!
