The WMA is a civilian non-profit veterans association comprised of women who have served or are serving honorably in the United States Marine Corps regular or reserve components.

Since 1918, American women have answered their country's call to serve. We have served proudly with distinction and honor; each generation evolving but always retaining our proud traditions.

A good organization, but unfortunately I live in the wrong part of the country where I would feel involved and effective in it.

When I finally could get in touch with someone in my area to ask about what their WMA chapter was involved with, I was told that they only had semi-annual luncheons. Then I was asked, "Do you have a car?" Seems they needed drivers to get the gals to and from these luncheons. I suppose that would have been a way to support the WMA, but it really wasn't what I had in mind.

And, it was better than the response I received from my local American Legion. There I was told I would be welcomed as a member because the Auxiliary needed more women to make crafts for the annual craft sale. Again, it wasn't exactly what I had in mind.

So these days I keep my ear to the ground and fly solo. And I'm constantly amazed at how the simple gesture of extending my hand and giving a hearty "Semper Fi" to a person wearing Marine Corps identifiable clothing can unexpectedly put a broad grin on a person's face.

And I've learned it's not all about being part of a big organization. Rather, it's about me getting off of my butt and doing what I can to honor and remember those who have gone before me. Even if it's simple greeting and handshake.

Semper Fi my brothers and sisters!
