Friend Remembers Fallen Luxemburg Soldier
(AP) GREEN BAY The military still hasn't confirmed the death of a Marine from the town of Green Bay ... but a man who claims to be the Marine's best friend says he heard the news from the young man's family.

Troy Metzler says the Marine's mother informed him of the death of her son -- 24-year-old Luke Zimmerman.

Metzler -- also 24-- says Zimmerman had called him just last week from Iraq. He says Zimmerman talked mainly about Metzler's recent wedding ... and didn't say much about Iraq.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that a man on Saturday came to the home of Zimmerman's mother, Claire Dombrowski. The newspaper says the man offered a brief statement in which he said Zimmerman's service was -- quote -- "exemplary" ... and would speak for itself.

The Dombrowskis were reportedly notified of their son's death on Friday but they've refused all requests for interviews.

Zimmerman graduated from Luxemburg-Casco High School in 2000.
