USS Freedom assists in cocaine seizure
February 28, 2010
The Marinette Marine Corp.-built USS Freedom (LCS-1) recovered more than a quarter of a ton of cocaine Monday in its first drug seizure.
Freedom was patrolling the Caribbean Sea when a high-speed vessel carrying suspected illicit drugs was located in the region, according to the Navy.
Following interception by a helicopter launched from the Freedom, the vessel jettisoned its cargo in the western Caribbean Sea.
The vessel eventually entered Colombian waters, where the Colombian Navy took over.
A team of sailors and Coast Guardsmen from Freedom coordinated with a Colombian Navy patrol boat and Colombian patrol aircraft to retrieve seven bales and 72 kilos of cocaine from the water.
This is the first deployment of USS Freedom, a first-in-class Littoral Combat Ship designed by Lockheed Martin at Marinette Marine Corp. in Marinette.
