Ira Hayes
Ira Hayes was Pima Indian born in Sacaton, Arizona on January 12, 1923. He left high school after two years of studying, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marine Corp Reserve. He then went to a parachute traing school located at the Marine Corps Base in San Diego and graduated from it. He then became a Private First Class and joined the 3rd Marine Parachute Battalion. After many years of training he sailed from Hawaii to Iwo Jima on D-Day. He battled there and was joined in on the Iwo Jima Flag raising. He was soon promoted to Corporal. He later died of alcohol posining on Januay 24, 1955.
