Marine Aircraft Group-11 points with pride to its distinction of being the first Marine Air Group. Formed from "Aircraft 1" during the 1930s, the unit received its present title on 1 August 1941.
After WWII, the Group returned to the US in January, 1946 after 16 month of duty at Peleliu. Since that time, MAG-11 has been stationed at Cherry Point.

Headquarters Squadron was founded in July of 1942 to handle administrative details for the Commanding Officer of MAG-11, to supply personnel for the Group staff departments, and to maintain the airplanes attached to the Group, but not the aircraft of the Group's fighter squadrons.
1951 began with Captain C. B. Malone as the Squadron CO. He was succeeded by Major T. P. Wojcik in May, 1951.

Marine Fighter Squadron-115 was organized on 1 July 1943 at Santa Barbara, CA. The first Commanding Officer was Major Joe Foss, Marine ace of Guadalcanal. In honor of Major Foss, the members of the squadron adopted the nickname "Joe's Jokers."
Since March, 1950, VMF-115 has been stationed at MCAS, Cherry Point. On 20 November 1950, while equipped with F9F-2B "Panther Jets", VMF-115 flew aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, becoming the first Marine jet fighter squadron toqualify for carrier landings aboard ship.
In 1951, the Commanding Officer was LtCol Robert G. Owens, Jr., holder of the Navy Cross.

Marine fighter Squadron-224 was first organized on 1 May 1942 at NAS, Barbers Point, Oahu. The original Commanding Officer was Major (in 1951, Colonel), Robert E. Galer, winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
After WWII and upon return from duty with the Fifth Air Force in Japan, VMF-224 was based at MCAS, El Toro until 7 June 1948 when the entire squadron was moved to MCAS, Cherry Point.
In December, 1949, the squadron began flying the twin-jet, high altitude interceptor, F2H-2 Banshee.

Marine Fighter Squadron-225 was commissioned on 1 January 1943 at MCAS, El Toro.
After duty in the Mariana Islands, on 1 July 1945, the squadron was reformed as a carrier based fighter squadron at MCAS, Mojave, CA. The next six months were spent qualifying for carrier aircraft duty aboard the USS Corregidor and USS Mindoro.
On 29 January 1946, VMF-225 was transferred to the 2dMAW at Cherry Point and has subsequently been referred to as the Itinerant Squadron of the 2ndMAW after making four Med cruises aboard the USS Siboney, USS Midway, USS Leyte, and USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, plus numerous local Caribbean cruises.
In 1951, the prime purpose of the squadron was to gain and maintain air superiority, isolate the battlefield and give air support to Fleet Marine Forces.
